East Ayrshire: New Recycling Service Dubbed “Waste Of Money”

Later in the month East Ayrshire will start their Kerbside recycling trolley service. This will be the first of its kind in Scotland.

A Recycling Vehicle

Stated on the EA website it says “The Scottish Government in its efforts to ensure waste is seen as a valuable resource, introduced the Household Recycling Charter for Scotland. This Charter is designed to establish a more consistent and uniform approach to how waste is captured for recycling across Scotland.”

Signatory to the household recycling charter, the council has bid for funding in excess to £2 million to introduce the new recycling trolley collection system.

This makes the council able to provide a weekly collection of paper, card, plastics, cans and glass and even the food waste using the same recycling vehicles they currently use. The blue bin will be taken away.

The trolley will consist of 3 separate boxes that will fit on a wheeled base.

The top box will have a lock on it and will be used to recycle paper and cardboard. The middle box will be for mixed plastics, cartons and cans and lastly the bottom for mixed glass.

The new trolley

This trolley when all stacked up will be the same size (roughly) as the current brown , blue and green wheeled bins. These trolleys will be delivered between February and July 2018.

Many have taken to social media posting what they think about this new system - and there aren’t many in favour of it!

Even though it hasn't yet been tried!

Someone posted “I would like to know what is going to happen to all the blue bins instead of spending 2 million on the new trolleys, why not use this money on something better like fixing our roads”

Another added “Complete waste of money”

However someone supported the new system as they said “I think this is a good idea, it will save a lot of stress and will be easier to move around rather than carrying wet boxes”

There will also be changes made to the red and black box.

The 2018 collection calendar highlights these changes. The red box will now be used for Plastics and cans and the black box will be used for mixed glass only. These will be collected weekly along with the food caddy.

There has been videos posted which explains the change find them below. Click the title of the video you want to watch.
