On Monday 5th February a black/Dark Blue BMW Convertible burst into flames between 5:30 and 6pm outside the cooperative in Academy street, Hurlford.

The cooperative had to shut for at least 30 minutes because of the incidents .

An eyewitness said that they were wanting to enter the shop. “The shutters were all lowered and access was denied until blaze was extinguished” they said the car was already on fire when they arrived “I could smell the smoke from a few streets away. When I came round the corner the car was fully ablaze from underneath the bonnet”

The fire service and police were quick to respond to the scene. The fire brigade had blocked access to the road.

Car fully ablaze

“When I could gain access I entered and the fire fighters were using cutting gear to open the bonnet to spray water inside. The car was still there when I left at approx 6.20”

Gust of smoke as blaze had been tackled

I contacted the officers who attended the scene from Kilmarnock Fire Station and was told they had not established the “facts” however they do know that the engine bay and the dashboard wires were the start of the fire.

According to Facebook posts the car was taken away from the scene and the cooperative reopened. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
